Summertime Safety for Kids: 5 Things to Keep in Mind

Summer is peering around the corner, and with the warm weather comes the understanding that your kids – and probably you too – are going to want to be outside as much as possible. Whether you live in a neighborhood, on a dirt road or on a busy street, there are some things to remember when letting your kids play outside. It’s important to consider the weather, traffic and everything that comes with it. What are some things you can do to help make sure your kids are safe this summer? Here are 5 of the most important things to keep in mind when your kids are spending time outside.

  1. Beat the Heat & Don’t Get Burnt

Make sure your kids are drinking plenty of water this summer. If they’re running around in the heat, riding bikes or climbing trees all day, be sure that they’re also getting plenty of rest. Keep in mind that morning and evening hours are the coolest times of day – depending on where you live, the afternoon can get pretty sweltering!

Also watch out for how long they’re in the sun. Just a few serious sunburns can increase anyone’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Reapply sunscreen all day long – especially if you and your kids are at the pool or in the ocean where the lotion can wash off!

  1. Play it Safe in the Yard

No matter what type of area you live in, make sure you keep track of your kids even when they’re just playing in the yard. If you’re in a neighborhood or off of a somewhat busy road, you never know what could happen. When there’s great weather, more people will be out on the roads, which means more for you and your kids to watch out for.

It’s also a good idea to let your kids keep a phone with them if they’re going to be outdoors for a while. If anything were to happen, emergency responders would be able to get to them much easier if they’ve got a charged phone on them. Plus, you want them to be able to contact someone if they needed help.

  1. Stay Aware in the Water

Whether you live near an ocean or in a neighborhood with a pool, teach your kids to swim! If you don’t live by water or if your neighborhood doesn’t have a pool, try to find lessons at your local community center.

If you’re spending lots of time out on a boat this summer, make sure everyone on board has a life jacket. You might consider taking CPR classes as well – it’s easy to learn and totally worth it in the event of an emergency.

  1. Keep the Bugs at Bay

Diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease can be spread through bug bites. Make sure your kids are fully armed with a good quality repellent, and check them for ticks nightly.

  1. Prevent Injuries

If your kids are going to be riding a bike, skateboarding or rollerblading, be sure they’ve got all the necessary protective gear. Helmets are a must! Elbow and knee-pads are also fantastic against deep gashes and scrapes. The safer and more protected your kids are outside this summer, the more fun they’ll have and the better you’ll feel!
